With the release of Avengers: Endgame this weekend, a lot of people are going to see their most anticipated film of 2019. Marvel's ten year plan comes together this Friday and sure yeah, I'm excited to see it. Reviews will be up for that as soon as possible. But what are some other films to look forward to for the rest of the year? So here, in order of how excited I am, are the five films I most looking forward to.
5. Star Wars- The Rise of Skywalker
Release date: December 20, 2019
Speaking of the end of an era. The new Star Wars trilogy comes to an end this December with JJ Abrams returning to the helm after The Force Awakens. Honestly I don't have much hope for this film. Abrams is all visuals and no story for me and he always seems to be arrogant to me in interviews. Is he talented? Of course, absolutely. I such wish sometimes he would get out of his own way. I can't help but be excited. I grew up with Star Wars. I watched the original trilogy over and over again on VHS. I knew those movies by heart. Even as a cynical grown up thirty something I still get chills when that title comes up and the music plays. This universe always brings out my inner child.
4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Release date: July 26, 2019
OK this trailer does nothing for me. I feel cold watching it. But I don't care. This is the new film from Quentin Tarantino. Anytime he has a film it's an event and a true fan of cinema needs to go out and see it. In this film he takes on real life events as he tells a story set against the events of the Manson murders. Last time Tarantino did a historical piece, he rewrote history with Inglorious Basterds. We'll see what he does here.
3. Midsommer
Release date: July 3, 2019
I am kicking myself that I never wrote up Hereditary for the best of 2018. It was a brutal disturbing horror film that came out of nowhere. Seriously. That film is so fucked up but amazing at the same time. Writer director Ari Aster returns with Midsommer, which is about a young couple that goes to a festival held once every ninety years. From the looks of the trailer we have another disturbing slow build horror film. I only need to see this first trailer and be sold. Hereditary was an amazing film and this guy is one of the must watch directors working today.
2. John Wick 3: Parabellum
Release date: May 17, 2019
I love the first two John Wick movies. They are what I want out of an action films and cements Keanu Reeves as an action legend. John Wick, for those who don't know, is a contract killer who has been excommunicated by his network of other contract killers. Now every killer for hire out there is after him to collect a hefty bounty that is on his head. Yep. That's the film. Look at that picture. It tells us exactly what we're going to see. The action fan in me is so excited. Let's do this.
1. Brightburn
Release date: May 24, 2019
I can't wait. I can't fucking wait for this film. I hope this starts a new trend of seriously dark comic book films. That new Joker trailer looks laughably bad to me. This is the super villain origin I want. What if Superman decided to use his powers for evil? What if that shy lonely picked on kid down the street was a God? Brightburn could not work as it might just be only as good as it's premise. But the trailer has me excited. I'll link to it below. For example, there's the scene where he hurts a fellow student who is being mean to him. Hurts them badly because he's basically Superman. But look at his eyes. It isn't an accident. He knew what he was doing. He thinks, I'm going to crush every bone in your hand and there's nothing you can do to stop me. Brightburn is an evil Superman movie. But I think it's going to rival anything DC has done since Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.
